The Veil of the Underworld
You stand in a huge circular chamber carved through dark rock that glows
with a fierce red light. Veins of fire pulse in the jagged stone as though
this place was cut out from the world's heart. The freezing ground is sharp
as broken glass, every movement you make sends rivulets of blood running
from your torn feet. A swirling wind blasts through the chamber, knocking
you to your knees under its frenzied gale. In the centre of this unholy
place, a grim portal rises from the hard ground. Carved from bone and
flesh, bound with flaming rings of steaming brass and marked with terrible
runes of pain and death it rises, hideous, infernal, hellish beyond mortal
nightmares. A hundred feet over your head it towers, as though a titan were
expected to enter. Through the portal's gaping mouth, nothing but heat,
flames, red mist and black essence twisting together in vile congruence can
be seen. This is the Veil of the Underworld, the godly barrier that keeps
the Great Devourer from consuming the land. All his efforts, all his power,
all his dominance is bent on tearing it down. For now, the strength of your
own heroic soul keeps you from being drawn into the portal, but with each
death you will grow weaker... Until you will rise no more.
