     The tunnel opens up into a shaft leading up to the next mining level. 
There is an old wooden ladder that appears to be the only way up, and that's
what scares you.  The miners are constantly running up and down the ladder with
no fears.  The path goes up and to the west. 

There are two obvious exits : west and up.
