Petrified Forest

It is hard to see in the gloom of the overcast forest.  Tall, petrified oaks
and young, crystallized saplings work together in blocking almost all rays of
light from this area.  You jump suddenly as you catch sight of a young elf
peeking at you from behind a tree.  When you walk over, your heart turns to ice
as you see that the elfin child is frozen in time with no past and no future. 
The barrage of fallen arrows, mostly broken from striking the petrified elf,
tell you that you are not the only one to happen accross the unfortunate,
statuesque child.

Only slivers of light make their way through the thick boughs overhead to light
your way dimly.  You feel a bit anxious, in spite of yourself, and glance
worriedly around.  But nothing stirs on the trail ahead nor moves in the trees
about you, so you walk onward, picking your way along the winding path that
seems to disappear into a wall of trees and bushes in every direction.  Your
pace slows when you realize that almost anything could be lurking there.

You halt suddenly, gasping as you come to the base of an enormous oak.  Its
dark wood is entombed in crystal, and you see several places where oozing sap
has been ionized into a gold, fragile substance.  As your eyes travel upwards,
you notice a worm, half in and half out of a hole in the bark.  You shudder as
you realize that whatever did this was sudden and devastating.
