     As you run your hands against the walls of the mines you feel that they
are heavily dented from the pick.  The miners are concentrating on their work
and don't seem to take any notice of you being there.  The piercing sounds of
the pick crashing into the rock walls leaves a ringing in your ears.  The trail
goes to the northwest and to the southwest from here. 

There are two obvious exits : southwest and northwest.
